Women in the Workplace | Dorothy Renzi

Featuring Dorothy Renzi, Masters Insurance

Tell us about yourself, your company and your career in insurance.

I work at Masters Insurance as a Commercial Lines Manager. I manage a team of over 25 licensed brokers. I started out as an unlicensed TSR and moved into every role from Marketing Broker to Account Executive. In 2019, I moved into my first management role and have truly enjoyed it. Outside of work I’m a mom to all boys and when I’m not in the office, you can always find me at a rink.

How did your career path begin and what advice has helped you along the way?

Like a large majority of brokers, I fell into the insurance world. I was previously in the medical field and had a patient who was in the insurance industry who convinced me that insurance would be a great career path. Looking back, I am so grateful that I made that move.

The best advice that helped me along the way was two-fold. Never be afraid to admit you don’t know the answer. And never be afraid to ask questions. In an industry that is constantly evolving, we’re always learning new things. Find a mentor and be open to learn.

What are three pieces of advice you would give to women in the workplace?

  1. Don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t do it.
  2. Be confident and comfortable with having success.
  3. Embrace what you think you cannot do, take risks and put yourself out there.

What has been the most rewarding part of your career?

Coming into the industry with not an ounce of knowledge and being able to share my knowledge now and mentor new people. Seeing my team succeed is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced.

What keeps you excited about going to work every day?

As cliché as it sounds, I love my job. I love the people I work with. I have an amazing team who’re all working towards the same goal. Every day is an opportunity that I have to contribute to the growth of the company and make a difference with my team.

What is the most challenging aspect of your business?

The most challenging aspect is keeping up with the evolving risks and having difficult conversations.

How do you stay on top of the ever-changing world of insurance?

By ensuring I am constantly furthering my education, staying on top of insurance news and networking.

What habit did you develop that was most helpful to you throughout your career?

I don’t know if I could name just one habit but if I had to pick a top habit, it would be time management. The industry is very fast paced, and I wouldn’t have been successful if I didn’t master my time management skills to help myself prioritize my tasks and not miss deadlines. Now with managing a team, my time management skills have become even more important.
