Protecting Yourself from Misinformation in the Age of AI

April 8, 2024

With the proliferation of AI technologies shaping the information we consume, it’s more important than ever to be cautious about what we take in. Discerning between reliable sources, misinformation and propaganda will continue to get more difficult, and media literacy will continue to be our best defense.

1. Consume Cautiously

Develop a habit of questioning the content you encounter online, especially sensational headlines and clickbait. Approach information with skepticism and seek corroborating evidence before accepting it as truth. And rearranging the letters of “E-l-v-i-s” to spell “l-i-v-e-s,” doesn’t count as evidence.

2. Scrutinize Sources

Before sharing information, ensure it’s from a reputable news organization. If it’s not from a prominent, easily recognizable source, verify the info with a fact-checking website. Something might feel emotionally true, but you should still fact-check it if it comes from a site with a name like InfoPunch or TruthBlast.

3. Diversify Perspectives

Seek information from diverse sources and viewpoints to avoid echo chambers, foster critical thinking and develop a more nuanced understanding of complex issues. To be clear, this doesn’t mean including viewpoints of cranks, like those you might find on InfoPunch or TruthBlast.

4. Interrogate Biases

Take time to reflect on your own biases and beliefs that may influence how you interpret and share information. Being aware of your biases can reduce the likelihood of being swayed by misleading information. Everyone has biases, the same way all drivers have blind spots and only by acknowledging that would you know to do a shoulder check.

5. Gently Correct

If you see family or friends sharing misinformation, and you think they’d be open to hearing an alternative viewpoint, with great care, you can try to point out that the information might not be correct. Maybe start with a DM, the whole time keeping in mind the other person’s humanity.

6. Stay Informed

Keep up to date on the latest developments in AI and misinformation. Stay vigilant, stay curious and continue to hone your critical thinking skills to navigate the digital world with confidence. And when the AI takeover is complete, you’ll already know who the robo-emperor is and then we can all pledge allegiance to his digital holiness, StockTipBot.
