An Insider’s Look at Exams

November 25, 2024

Michael Mizerak—Exams Coordinator, IBAO

During pandemic times, IBAO took on the daunting task of administering RIBO’s licensing exams. These were written in-person at the office and across various locations—all done under strict pandemic protocols of course.

By the start of 2022, we implemented online exams administered with a virtual proctor. A year later, all exams were fully online. Ever since the transition to online, exams have continued to grow at IBAO.

We often receive inquiries from candidates about what they can do to make sure their exam goes well. Virtual proctoring can be challenging, especially the first time you do it. Here are a few ways to keep any bumpiness at bay.

A Smoother Experience

When scheduling your exam, you’re scheduling your start time with the proctor. This is when you’ll begin pre-checks prior to the actual start of the exam. It doesn’t impact your overall exam time—candidates are still allotted their full time after they’ve completed pre-checks.

On the day of the exam, we recommend an enclosed room to write in, free of distractions, where you won’t be bothered. Try to remove additional monitors or devices. We’ve noticed an increase in Remote Access Software which has been causing issues, so we highly recommend the removal of those applications prior to exam day.

And this might go without saying, but it’s always better to schedule your exam sooner rather than later. Time slots fill up quickly—IBAO has administered over 2,200 exams in 2024 alone—so book your exam the minute you know when and where you want to take it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if something goes wrong during the exam?

Check your equipment prior to the exam day. Instructions for this are included in preliminary exam emails. In the unfortunate event something does go wrong, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Exams Team—416.488.7422 or exams@ibao.on.ca. That’s one of the many things we’re here for!

When do you host exams and how do I register?

Current exam dates are available on our website and updated regularly. Within each individual exam is a description, eligibility and instructions on how to register.

Something’s come up—can I get a transfer or refund?

We understand life happens and can accommodate transfers and refunds. Within 15 days of an exam there’s an administrative fee, but as always, just reach out to us first.

Don’t Panic

As an Exams Coordinator, part of my role is to regularly test exam services, as an anonymous test-taker. I might be the exception here, but I think taking an exam can be fun.

The best advice I can give is not to panic. This is easier said than done, but limiting stress is key. You can do this by reading IBAO emails and communications thoroughly and in advance—we try to provide clear instruction and pre-emptive assistance wherever possible.

Once you’ve completed your exam, there’s no better feeling than earning a good score that validates all your hard work. Our goal is to make the exam process as smooth and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on doing your best. With the right preparation and mindset, you’ll find that success is within reach.
