Loonies in the Street Raises $1.7 Million for Kawartha Food Share Over 20 Years
2019 marked the 20th anniversary of a Peterborough tradition started by Peter Blodgett of Darling Insurance. It began with three business owners inviting people through local radio to stop by with a donation for the Kawartha Food Share and has now grown into a community–wide event. Peter dresses as Santa each year, joining volunteers who help collect donations from 7:00AM–10:00PM. This year was their biggest year, raising $160,000. Over the last 20 years this initiative has raised close to $1.7 million. With each dollar donated, the Kawartha Food Share can buy $6 in food. They distribute over $8 million dollars’ worth of food each year and close to 750,000 pounds of food every month.
