Celebrating 2020 IBAO Community Leaders

e’re continuing our Community Leadership Award Spotlight throughout the year, featuring Ontario Brokers who went above and beyond for their community last year.
Stephen Darling
President, Stan Darling Insurance
Stephen is well-known in the industry, having served several terms on IBAO’s Board of Directors and currently part of IBAO’s Group Plans Committee. He loves giving back to his community and does so by participating in food drive events for local food banks and donating thousands of pounds of food over the years to those in need. For each policy a customer moves from paper to electronic delivery, Stephen donates $5 to local food banks.
“It was an honour to be recognized by the IBAO for the charitable work we perform in our communities. After more than 80 years, the owners and staff at Stan Darling Insurance know we couldn’t be successful without our community and strive to better it whenever we can. We decided to concentrate our donations with the local food banks as they provide an essential service and have a local presence in each of the towns we belong to. Combining the donation with an environmental initiative like our Go Green program just seemed like a win-win idea.”
Rorie McIntosh
President, McCam Insurance Brokers
Rorie and McCam Insurance have been supporting Easter Seals for years in a variety of ways, from placing large sponsorships in support of local telethons, volunteering at events, funding scholarships for Easter Seals kids to attend post-secondary education and hosting local fundraising events annually such as the McCam Classic. Rorie cares for the families on a personal level and is passionate about his community and making a positive difference to those in need.
"It was an honour to receive this award at the same time we celebrated our 100th anniversary as an IBAO Member. We appreciate the donation IBAO made to Easter Seals Ontario, who we chose to support because we’ve seen how they help both family and child at the same time. The organization does fantastic work. Being around these kids and hearing their hopes and dreams is inspiring and rewarding."
Rose Palombi
Personal Lines Account Manager,
Martin & Wright Insurance & Financial Services
Rose is a genuine and caring individual who’s always looking for ways to improve people’s quality of life in and out of the office and in every aspect of her life. She works hard to help her community and teammates who are always her first priority. Every year for the past five years, Rose has taken pride in orchestrating Martin & Wright’s Annual Breast Cancer Bake Sale, each year bringing in more money than the previous. Rose takes the time to send out invitations to nearby businesses and her efforts work every time, bringing in many people from the community to engage and raise money for this cause.
“I’m honoured that my colleagues nominated me for this award, recognizing our collective efforts for different charities supporting our community in Mississauga. This has been a humbling experience that I share with my colleagues. The Breast Cancer Society is personal and very dear to many people in our office. We have raffles and a bake sale that started within the office and branched out to our surrounding neighbours in the complex. We also support The Salvation Army for their efforts in providing food and clothing to those less fortunate. Likewise, we continue to support the Peel Region Toys for Tots program during the Christmas season. These are the gifts that we at Martin & Wright Insurance will keep on giving.”
Ruxandra Rodgers
Vice President, Leslie & Giles Insurance
Ruxandra is constantly looking for new ways to give back to her community and support the team at Leslie & Giles any way she can. Over the past few years, she set up a book drive in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, encouraging clients to donate old books to be sold with all proceeds going to charity. She also coordinated support for a local baseball team two years in a row to help ensure they had access to year-round training, top indoor facilities, uniforms and equipment.
“It was such a wonderful surprise to have been nominated and then recognised as one of IBAO’s Community Leaders. Our family business has been sponsoring athletes and running charity events for over 50 years—giving back to the community has always been an integral part of our company culture. I chose to send my donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Toronto in honour of my late grandfather who used to own the brokerage. This was an awesome way to spread some goodwill during such a tough year for everyone, especially seniors. I’m very thankful to the IBAO for the honour and the lovely way of helping us give back to those around us.”
